Overview
The remarkable true story of a young Billy Graham and his best friend who walked away from the faith.  It is one of the great untold dramas between friends - Atheism vs Christianity, betrayal and hope.

Publishers Description
Charles Templeton was one of the greatest preachers of the mid-twentieth century, and a friend and mentor to a young Billy Graham. He was also in the early stages of becoming an atheist. Based on the remarkable true story, Billy is the untold account of the early years of Billy Graham and the relationship between these two extraordinary men told from the perspective of a dying Charles Templeton. Reminiscing to a reporter from his hospital bed in 2001, the haunted Templeton recounts Billy's simple beginnings, the moving love story of Ruth Bell, the moves of "chance" and divine blessing that brought him success, and the growth of their friendship. Together, they had envisioned plans to win the world for Christ. But life brought them both to a crisis of faith. You already know how the Billy Graham story turns out. Billy tells of a moment in history when things might have turned out very differently.

Billy  Feb 8, 2010
Billy,
William Paul McKay and Ken Abraham share a compelling look into the life of Billy Graham in the book Billy! The writers take the reader in an interesting dialog between the perspective of Charles Templeton, early evangelist with Billy Graham, and an interesting walk through the life of Billy Graham.
Graham stated early on that is was his desire that Jesus would be the focus and I believe this book did just that! This book shared an interesting look into the early travels of Billy Graham and Charles Templeton as they travelled around the world sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
The book focuses on many trials and triumphs these men faced through the eyes of Templeton. What I liked about the book was how it brought out many of Mr. Grahams characteristics allowing the reader to really get to know him, his love for his family and his love for Jesus Christ as he shared the Gospel.
It contrasted two men who ended up with two different viewpoints on life. One had a confidence in what he believed and one who later struggled and ultimately turned his back on what he believed to be true. Billy shares the importance of Faith and remaining true to what you believe!

A great biography of a great evangelist  Aug 31, 2009
An amazing biography of a man so many people in the world today idolize. He is upheld as a man of God, closer to God than anyone today in most people's books. But this story brings him back down to earth. This story makes Billy Graham into the man next door, faults and all. McKay and Abraham tell the story of how Billy struggled with his call and how he sought out other avenues before he finally surrendered to God and became the evangelist we know him as today.

A very well written story of suspense, Billy captures you into the life of a man who struggled with his own faith, and turned from God to become an atheist. The story of two friends who part ways and struggle to find their own way is a page-turner. Even though I knew the rest of the story, it was heart-wrenching to read. It's like a movie you have seen time and time again. You are begging the main character NOT to walk in the room, not to pick up the phone, not to turn from a God who loves him enough to send His own Son, Jesus Christ, to die.

This message is clear, although not concise. God's call is God's call. You can run away, but God will find you. God will mold you into the person He needs you to be to do His will. He will allow you to follow a path that you may or may not want to follow, but the person you will become is far greater because of that path. Read the book. You will not be sorry.

Billy Graham had a faith struggle in his youth  Aug 26, 2009
In 1965, when i was 16 years old, i saved up every penny i could get, from allowances, yard work and baby sitting jobs, and bought an airplane ticket to Houston to see and hear Rev. Billy Graham at the Astrodome. I have listened to him on the radio before and after that, and read every book he ever wrote. This wonderful man of faith has had a profound effect on my spiritual growth and developmenbt as a Christian, as i know he has helped millions of people. I was therefore extremely interested and a little surprised to learn from this book, that he was not always so positive, that in his early years he went through a great struggle, especially when his best friend and fellow evangelist, Charles Templeton, consumed by doubts, lost his faith.

This book is an easy read, written in a smooth, flowing, narrative style, and is very pleasant all the way through, sometimes very thought-provoking. It is a must read for everyone who has been influenced or affected in any way by the life and ministry of Rev. Billy Graham.

Young evangelist faces a Big Question, and makes the choice that changes the world.  Apr 5, 2009
Francesca Battistelli's song, Free to Be Me, has some great lyrics that speak to me. Particularly, in the first verse, she says, "At twenty years of age, I'm still looking for a dream. A war's already waged for my destiny. But You've already won the battle, and You've got great plans for me, though I can't always see."

I love singing along to this song, but I hadn't thought about the war that's waged for each of our destinies. Not really.

Until I read William Paul McKay and Ken Abraham's biography of Billy Graham, Billy: The Untold Story of a Young Billy Graham and the Test of Faith that Almost Changed Everything.

I don't read a lot of biographies. And I'll be honest: this one took me a while to get through. The book tells the story of how Billy Graham became Billy Graham, and it's told through the eyes of his friend and former evangelist turned agnostic, Charles Templeton. McKay and Abraham frame the telling of Graham's - and Templeton's - story as an interview with a reporter looking for dirt on the beloved Graham. (In case you're actually wondering, I'll skip to the ending for you: no, she did not get any dirt.)

I felt that the writing was a bit plodding in some parts and a bit preachy in others. Some areas really called for suspense of my disbelief, as I wondered how Templeton, who was telling the story, could possibly know so many details of Graham's life. That's the tricky part of a biography, I suppose: writing a true story that reads like fiction, maintaining truth while keeping it interesting.

But in the back half of the book, the authors finally get to the point they advertised on the back cover: A remarkable friendship. An agonizing betrayal. The true story of a crisis of faith.

When Charles Templeton, Graham's best friend and partner in a budding evangelism career, gave in to the doubts and questions he held about Christianity, eventually denouncing everything he'd believed and everything Graham continued to preach, it understandably rocked Graham's world.

The climax of the book and the turning point in Graham's life was a night at a retreat center in California. McKay and Abraham describe in detail the supernatural battle between God and Satan for Graham's soul, his future and his ministry.

Of course we know how this story ends. But reading about the war that was waged - and considering the consequences from that one night, that one decision - pretty much blew me away.

If you're a fan of biographies or of Billy Graham, I say read this book. Or if you are interested in learning more about how God could use one simple farm boy to literally change this world, I say read this book. Because it's more than a story. It's a miracle and a lesson and an inspiration.

Like I said before, it took me a long time to get around to reading this book. But I am glad I did. And I hope you will, too.

Review of Billy  Mar 24, 2009
What would have happened had Billy Graham been derailed from his pursuit of becoming America's best-known evangelist?
Through the eyes of one of Billy's closest friends in his early ministry, Charles Templeton, we catch glimpses of Billy Graham's early adult life, his courtship of Ruth, and the foundation of Billy's crusade beginnings.
The reader is also exposed to a critical crossroad which takes Templeton out of ministry altogether and further cements Graham to become the greatest evangelist of the 20th century. It's amazing to see how to great men can be exposed to the same circumstance and have completely different conclusions.
All in all, I enjoyed the fast-paced storytelling of Billy, yet, as with all 250 page books, there are gaps I wish would have been covered.
There are many emotional notes in the book. I was especially moved as Templeton lay bed-ridden and is asked by the documentary reporter you'll be introduced to in the book how he felt about Jesus: "I miss Him," was Templeton's reply.
If you are looking for a solid read that will give you a few new insights into the life of Billy Graham, Billy may be the book for you.
