This prize-winning novel for the 7-10 year old reader is a story of small town Pennsylvania in the depression years.
The characters, especially Margo Bandini and her family,are warm,chatty Italian immigrants and are very much a part of the back-porch small town.
They and other families suffer loss of family pride and desperation,as their lives are tangled in the Depression. Franklin Delano Roosevelt's 'fireside chats" offer about their only ray of hope outside of the family's optimism that they can overcome whatever happens.
Margo's father's shoe repair shop suffers when people have no money to fix their shoes. Will bad luck come from the shooting stars? Is little Charlie lost forever? Will neighbor Rosa'a father come home and help fight to save their home? Will Margo's family lose their home? No-one knows.
Then;The Assignment:to write a letter to a famous person,is given to Margo,Rosa and the school class. On the surface,the letter is just an English and Geography lesson. No-one dreams what one young girl's letter will do, until a mystery is revealed. | | | | Five stars but... Jul 20, 2006 |

Eleven-year-old Margo Bandini lives with her Mama, Papa, and brother,Charlie in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. It is the early 1930's and the Great Depression is sweeping the land like a plague and ruining peoples lives. Steel Mill workers in Margo's hometown are losing their jobs. Margo's Papa is in debt because he borrowed $5,000 from the bank that they used for Charlie's leg oporation. The Bandinis now have two weeks to pay back the $5,000 they owe or else they will be forced to move from their home. For a school project, Margo's class has to write a letter to someone whom they admire. Margo decides to write to Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt, also known as Eleanor Everywhere. Since her husband, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, has gotten sick with polio, Mrs. Roosevelt goes around the country helping those in need. Will the letter get there in time? Can Mrs. Roosevelt help the Bandinis?
A Letter to Mrs. Roosevelt is an historical fiction novel. This book is narrated from Margo's point of view. On a scale of one to five stars, this book would rate a four because itis very interesting, but we think it ended too soon. 0/440/41529/2 Do you think there is a book that can care boredom? Well there is, it is called a letter to Mrs. Roosevelt. An interesting quote I found, "the only thing we have to fear is fear itself." This book is really interesting, it explains very well in detail. The summary is about and eleven year old girl, Margo Bandini, who lives in Johnston, PA. She has a mom, dad, brother and a best friend named Rosa. The time it's going on is the great depression, causing the families loss of money. In school Margo's whole class has to write a letter to someone that inspires them. Margo picks Eleanor Roosevelt. A sheriff sign soon goes up and they must leave there house. Now Margo has to help papa by Eleanor's advice and her own. The genre is realistic fiction. This book was tops because it was so much fun to read. The creativity of turning a real event into fiction was very well done. I do recommend this book because anyone would like it. It's exciting, makes you like reading and at the same time you are not bored. This book is probably for a 12 year old girl who doesn't like to read and wants some fun, but the reading level is average. It was a page turner because a lot of things went on in the story, so you didn't want to stop and not find out what happened next. This story was definitely not hard to concentrate because it relates so much to real life. I connected to Margo because we both are nice and will do anything to help others. I like the genre because of the adventure. The style of writing was interesting because, example: a lot of quotes, life wise thinking and characters came to life. What surprised me was when a sheriff sign went up on the house and Charlie found out it was his fault because he broke his leg and had to have surgery for a lot of money. Not every chapter ended with a cliff hanger, but most did. Example: thank you Miss Dobson, but won't my letter need more stamps? I can still picture Miss Dobson smile. She never answered me)this book was not boring because of the mystery. No my mind didn't wander when reading because it's well standard.
