Overview
Max the dog and Liz the cat become the brave leaders of a group of animals called to journey to the Ark.

Publishers Description

Max, a Scottish terrier, takes his usual morning trot down to the loch where he hears a mysterious Voice humming in the reeds saying, ""Come to Me...follow the fire cloud."" He embarks on an unknown journey from Scotland, meeting other animals along the way including Liz, a brilliant, petite black cat from France. Max and Liz become the brave leaders for their group, and eventually, for the entire ark. The mysterious journey, filled with danger, humor, trials, and triumphs, leads them across Europe to the Middle East. The moment of arrival for these animals is spectacular as the ark is miraculously transformed into the animals' natural habitats.

Throughout the previous one hundred years, Noah and family have endured ridicule from villagers while building the ark. Now this family must painfully witness the loss of lives and total destruction of the earth through the mighty flood.

After the journey to the ark, the voyage in the ark begins. Liz finds ways to keep the animals occupied, including daily exercise led by the flamingos and a talent night where the animals entertain each other with their natural abilities. But a sinister plot develops Someone is out to kill Noah and his family. Liz follows clues that lead her to discover a stowaway who has deceived them all. Max and Liz foil the plot, but at a high price. The end climaxes with unexpected twists and turns, taking the reader from despair to hope.

An enjoyable story about Noah's Ark.   Feb 9, 2009
The Ark, the Reed and the Fire Cloud is an enjoyable story about Noah's Ark. Actually, the innovative aspect is that this story is retold from a unique perspective; via the adventures of a dog, Max, who is called by the Voice to follow the red cloud and fulfill his own destiny. What is going to happen to him on the way to the Ark? Max feels lonely but soon he comes across a lot of new friends that he will protect during their long journey to the other side of the earth.

The author manages to retell this old Bible story from a fresh point of view. The language is simple for all children to follow and the cover is very attractive. In this book the kids meet all kinds of animals from all parts of the world, and it is humorous at times, sad or exciting to read about all the details Jenny provides her young readers with. This book caters to young readers, age 8-12, but it is also suitable for everyone in the family as it is entertaining and educational. It is a good read for schools and reading groups as it provides input to talk about and encourages readers to see old biblical stories in a new light. Get this book from www.this site.com

America's Answer to Harry Potter!  Jan 31, 2009
An amazingly well written story of the animals finding their way to Noah's Ark; the tale of these same creatures aboard the ark and the miraculous happening there and upon departure. Fascinating in every way. A good read for the whole family; one that can be read individually by teenagers and adults; one that will be thoroughly enjoyed when read aloud to younger children. Harry Potter - move over - Max and Liz have arrived! Not only do I highly recommend it to everyone, I just purchased one for each of my ten grandchildren - ages 6 to 25! They loved CS Lewis and Tolkin - they will adore Cote! And they will be amazed at what they learn as they read!

A charming story for young Christian readers or pet lovers in general  Jan 16, 2009
Noah's ark and the tale of the flood are older than Christianity itself, and Jenny Cote brings her own unique spin on the subject. "The Ark, the Reed, & The Fire Cloud" is a story of the ark told through the eyes of a Scottish terrier by the name of Max and a cat called Liz. Leading the way for the animal kingdom onto the ark of Noah, they must foil a plot that has been laid out to end the life of their human friend. "The Ark, the Reed, & the Fire Cloud" is a charming story for young Christian readers or just pet lovers in general.

Stories for Children Magazine 5 Star Review  Jan 11, 2009
REVIEWED BY: Wayne Walker

Max is a Scottish terrier who lives a quiet and peaceful life in the glen, but one day he hears the voice of the Maker speaking through a mysterious humming of the reeds telling him to follow the fire cloud. On the way, he meets Al, an Irish cat, and Kate, a West Highland terrier from another part of Scotland, both of whom have also heard the voice of the Maker. After they cross the English Channel, they meet up with Liz, a French cat, and several other animals who are following the fire cloud too, while animals from all over the world have been called as well. The fire cloud leads every one of them to a place in the Middle East where a man named Noah is building a big boat. I shall let your imagination figure out the rest of the story, except to say that during the voyage there is much mystery afoot in that someone aboard the ark is causing trouble, and attempts are made on both Max's and Noah's lives. Will Max and Liz be able to find out who is behind the plot and protect the humans?
What an ingenious and attention-catching way to tell the story of Noah and the ark, giving the viewpoint of the animals! The book is identified as "Juvenile Fiction-Fantasy." One would almost hesitate to call it "fantasy" because there are those of us who believe that the basis of the story, the Biblical account of the worldwide flood in Genesis, was a real event, but, of course, animals do not talk and exhibit human emotions. A note at the beginning says, "This is a work of fiction based on truth." The author wrote, "You may think I've taken great liberties with the Noah story, and I guess I have. Could God have transformed the ark into the natural habitats of the animals? Of course, but did He? Who knows? It's fun to think about what could have been, while holding true to what we do know."
This book is well written and easily kept me turning the pages to see what would happen next. In addition to being a fun story to read, there are important character traits exhibited, such as loyalty to friends, overcoming fears, exhibiting courage in the face of danger, and trusting in God, as well as an underlying depiction of the battle of good versus evil in the world. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and would recommend it highly to everyone. It is the first book in "The Amazing Tales of Max and Liz" series. The author is already writing the second volume, The Dreamer, The Schemer, and the Robe, in which Max and Liz return to help Joseph. Future books are planned which will take Max and Liz to important events in both Biblical and world history. Children who like stories about animals, and anyone who likes good fantasy fiction, especially something based on Bible stories, should appreciate this book.

Wonderful story!  Dec 4, 2008
This is a great book! I started reading it and immediately fell in love with the characters. After reading the first few chapters I realized there were wonderful spiritual truths woven into the story, and I knew I had to share it with my animal-loving daughter. So I started it over as a read-aloud with her. She is enjoying it as much as I am! Each chapter leaves her begging for more. She enjoys the gentle humor and adventure, and I appreciate the practical life lessons that are an integral part of the story -- trusting "the Maker", following where He leads, the value of friendship, the wisdom of elders... We look forward to reading the sequels!
