Item Description...

Not since the Civil War has America been so divided over such a seemingly unsolvable issue as U.S. immigration policy.

The president and congress are at an impasse, while vigilante groups patrol our nation's borders looking for one of the million yearly invaders. Why are 20 million people disregarding America's sovereign borders and laws to come to this country?APopular radio host Darrell Ankarlo follows the lives of several Mexican citizens as they contemplate their existence south of the border, their temptation to sneak into America, and what waits for them here. To understand the issue first-hand, Ankarlo stared down gun barrels, was caught in the middle of a drug-lord showdown, and then wandered the Arizona desert after illegally sneaking back into America. Another Man's Sombrero explores issues raised by these personal stories and offers perspectives-often contradictory-from U.S. citizens.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Great information, and a great read.  Aug 5, 2008
I have always liked reading political books and I have always like reading story books and fiction. This book is fantastic because it is like a story that gives facts. And these facts are important for any person living near the border to know. He presents these facts in a way that is easy to understand and is highly entertaining. It not only shows what it is like to cross the border but many other things on the way. These are good facts that would be hard to learn otherwise. Overall I think anyone, no matter their political views on this issue should read this book so they know what it is like.

An eye opener about immigration problems.  Aug 5, 2008
Darrell Ankarlo is very insightful and fair when dealing with the immigration issue, and this book demonstrates that. Instead of just preaching about the harms of illegal immigration, he places himself in the shoes of an illegal immigrant by traveling to various parts of Mexico's border towns. During his time there, he meets up with all sorts of people involved in the border crossing trade and tells some very memorable stories. If you are looking for a clear view of how dangerous illegal immigration is, not only for our country but also for those who come here illegally, this book will be an excellent read.

Vivid, true and tragic . . . but only half of a complex story  Aug 1, 2008

If you live by "scorched earth journalism" -- then you must expect to be burned every now and then.

Ankarlo has certainly been "burned" by some on account of this book, but he lives on the premise the "hotter" the flame the more listeners attracted to his KTAR radio talk show.

Perhaps it's why KTAR accepted $11,000 in government money to use this book to promote incumbent Republican County Attorney Andrew 'Candy' Thomas. It is a powerful indictment of illegal immigration, the major theme Thomas and Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio are using to win re-election.

Ankarlo's vivid focus is on the most victimized of illegal migrants; his stories are vivid, real, depressing and will stir the outrage of every decent person. If you think illegal migration is merely a walk in the sun to get a better job --- read this. It's really a walk through Hell to get to conditions that are sometimes little better than Hell.

His personal experiences on the border portray the grim reality of a region that is now a war zone of criminals and victims. Our border is now a 'No Man's Land' of utterly ruthless and vile smugglers of drugs, guns, criminals and their victims. Think of King Knut trying to sweep back the tide, and you'll have an idea of what the Border Patrol faces.

Sadly, he offers only half the story.

It was President Ronald Reagan who gave carte blanche to illegal immigration with his amnesty of 1986; in effect, he told every Hispanic "get to the U.S. any way you can, then we'll forgive you and let you stay."

It is also the hundreds of business owners who hire illegal migrants to work for minimal wages in a "right to work" state; if every construction company had to pay union wages, the attraction of low wage illegal migrants would vanish within days.

But, Ankarlo is conservative. He's not about to criticize Reagan nor businesses who hire illegals and buy ads on KTAR. Thus, it's half-a-book or less; what's here is vivid, true and presents a grim picture of the worst of the illegal migrant exploitation. But we truly deserve "the rest of the story" which he doesn't present.

It's as if he wrote a book about the worst evils of prostitution and ignored pimps and customers. It's a shallow but vivid introduction to a deadly human problem; but, it ignores the rich and easy lures that draw desperate and just plain greedy people into such danger.

After all, as is said when describing supine journalists as watchdogs of government, "half a dog is better than no dog at all." Ankarlo is truly half-a-dog. Readers can easily decide which half he best portrays.

Way to go brother!  Jul 19, 2008
This is a must read for those sitting on the fence regarding illegal immigration. Ankarlo gives a firsthand accounting of what is it like to simply walk across the border into the US. He then goes on to provide details and statistics on the real price of illegal immigration. This book is a wake-up call. True, I do wish he had expanded more on his time in Mexico and the crossings. Ankarlo definitely could have given us more information here. Lucky for me, I was one of ones who got it first hand on the radio. The majority of the book focuses on statistics and references. I suggest that you check out these references. I did. Definitely they have given me the courage to contact my elected representatives about closing our border. Get it, read it, digest it! Very insightful book.  Jul 18, 2008
I have just finished reading Mr. Ankarlo's "Another Man's Sombrero". This book is a very insightful look into the attack on our sovereignty as a nation from the illegal immigrant (let me repeat: illegal).

The first half of the book are stories from the author's personal trips on both sides of the border seeking the "inside" story on illegal immigration. Some of these accounts are heart-breaking, while others are outright scary!

The last half of the book is a look into some eye-opening statistics, interviews with experts and our leaders (Senator McCain included), and some personal thoughts on how to correct the problem.

The only reason I give this book 4 stars and not 5 is because I felt the stories in the first half of the book were hard to follow in a chronological format. Sometimes, I wasn't sure if he was going back to a previous trip or it was a new one.

I highly recommend this book because our nation is going to have to face this issue in some manner. I hope we can do it before it is too late and decided for us.
