Item Description...
Product Description It's the year 1570. Fourteen-year-old Guido Callatta, son of a wealthy Venetian merchant, spends his free time roaming the docks, listening to the wild tales of gnarled old sailors, and dreaming of adventures at sea. But his carefree life is about to change forever. Armies of Ottoman Turks threaten Europe from all sides, conquering Christian towns and forcing their people to convert. Moslem corsairs are raiding the coastlines at will. Guido even hears talk of a massive Turkish fleet preparing to sail from the East, bent on destroying Europe s forces once and for all. The Ottoman Sultan boasts that he will take Rome and set the crescent moon of Allah above the dome of Saint Peter s a crescent stained red with the blood of Christians. When Pope Pius V calls for the creation of a Holy League of men and ships to face down the Moslem armada, Guido vows to join the fight: for his family, for his city, for his Faith. And although his father tells him he s too young for war, soon he s caught up in a whirlwind of knights and nobles, bloody battles and arduous journeys. Finally, Guido finds himself alongside Don John of Austria, who will lead the Holy League in its last desperate fight to save Christian Europe: the legendary Battle of Lepanto. In this historical tale of Catholic heroism, courage, and holiness, readers of all ages will be reminded that when the Faith is threatened, extraordinary valor may be demanded of any one of us even the very young.

 | A Turning Point In History---and a great story May 6, 2010 |
The plot and historical outline are given in the product description. What it does not tell you is that the characters are well-sketched and the fictional plot underlying the historical battle (that happens at the end of the book) is a great read. It may be a little confusing at first if one does not have some grasp of the era, but then the story kicks in and some of the historical details are secondary. It is wise to look up terms with which one is not familiar. Terms such as The Holy League and bodkin are not common today.
The story is told from the viewpoint of a Roman Catholic boy in Venice. It should not surprise anyone that Venice was Catholic at that time. Many of the major forces involved in the naval battle were from Italy, Spain, and Austria. Interestingly, the boy spends some time in a monastery for protection. That form of sanctuary played a role countless lives through the centuries and in this novel we get a glimpse of the wisdom, love, and mentoring that was received by those who inhabited a monastery for a time.
It is important for Westerners to have some grasp of just how much Western Europe was threatened by the Turkish Empire following the fall of Constantinople. | | | Write your own review about Blood Red Crescent
