 | Typo errors make reading this a chore Jan 14, 2010 |
| This book is full of typo errors, miss-spellings, incorrect annotations on maps, etc. There is at least one or more errors on each page. There are comments about federal troops overrunning union positions, the USS Monitor was struck by its own shots, the CSS Virginia became the USS Virginia, and on and on. The pictures and maps are nice to look at, but that is all. The author should hang his head in shame to have his name associated with such a poorly printed book. | | | | Very useful , informative, and entertaining. Dec 20, 2009 |
Wonderful maps, charts, troop movements, etc., make this a volume I keep right by the chair where I read, so I can refer to it easily. I haven't looked for errors such as typos, because I know most of the history fairly well and don't use it for that. For a mental picture of the actions, for the reader to carry with him, I recommend this highly.
My copy lists John MacDonald as the author, not Mr. Russell. | | | | Nice pictures; extremely poor text Nov 26, 2009 |
| I bought this atlas for the maps and illustrations, which are handy as a supplement to other histories of the war. The text, however, appears not to have been professionally edited or proofread. The book is riddled with typographic errors and occasional errors of fact. To take examples from only two pages: the text misprints "way" for "war" (375); at the top of 376 Macdonald states that Andrew Johnson "became the only President in American history to be impeached," neglecting Nixon and Clinton; there is what appears to be a rather garbled sentence, reading "New people were admitted to the social and power structure with an influx of Northern immigrants after the war accelerated the process"; "statue" is miscapitalized "Statue"; and the text gives "Grand Army of the Republican" instead of "Grand Army of the Republic." Again, all this in only two pages. It would be tedious to multiply instances--practically any page of the book would supply more. | | | Write your own review about Historical Atlas of the Civil War
