This book is about a boy named Nathanial Bowditch. No one likes him and he goes to bad school with a mean tearcher. When Nathanal Bowditch is about 10, his teacher found out he was good at math and advanced him to a higher math class where everone respected him. Even though he was he was a indentured servant and he couldn't leave the person's house, he still found the time to study Math,Latin,French.
Then he put all his knowledge together. He also devloped many ways to navigate a ship that we still use today! I liked the book because it is good historical fiction and the author uses good clear nautical terms. | I remember reading this book as a child; first, being forced to read it for a book report and then finding I could not wait to turn the page! None of the reviews I have read mentioned the ending, guess they didn't want to give away the best part of the book! I remember my mom made me read this story when I was homeschooled. Carry on Mr Bowditch was a book that I actully enjoyed reading when I was homeschooled. Mr Bowditch is an inspiration. He had the attitude that he could do anything he could put his mind too.
I recently saw this book on sale at the library and immediatly snatched it up. I read it for the second time. Which is something I rarely do.
And I told my mom that I wish I had the determination that this kid had.
I gave this book 4 stars because this book became depressing at times. His mother died, his grandmother, his father(I am assuming died because he was never mentioned after awhile), his sister, his brother in law his two brothers and his first wife.
