Product Description
When it passed Title IX of the Civil Rights Act in 1972, Congress seemed to be doing something laudable and also long overdue-prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sex in America's schools. But thirty years later, a law designed to guarantee equal opportunity has become the most explicit, government-enforced quota regime in America. Tilting the Playing Field is a trenchant insider's look at how one law--and its unintended consequences--has affected our view of sports, sex, and schools.

Outline Review
In the tradition of Who Stole Feminism? and Christina Hoff Sommers, Jessica Gavora offers a devastating account of feminism gone haywire. For more than a generation, liberal women's groups have used a piece of federal civil rights legislation called Title IX to expand opportunities for women to play sports in college. In a classic case of unintended consequences, however, they've wrought enormous damage on men's sports programs. The cost of complying with Title IX has led to the abolition of hundreds of men's sports programs, including some heralded ones. In 1993, for instance, UCLA dropped its men's swimming and diving teams, which had produced 16 Olympic gold medalists. This is all done in the name of sexual "proportionality"--the supposed iniquity of men playing sports more than women. Gavora is a good writer and a perceptive critic who notes an exquisite irony: "Whereas in every other area of life, from the military to the boardroom to the bedroom, women's rights activists have insisted that women be allowed to compete in the same arena with men, Title IX activists have worked in athletics to protect women's special status.... On this narrow score, difference is accepted." Gavora also points out that Title IX radicalism won't halt at the edge of the sporting field; it's now stepping into new areas, including school harassment policies, student testing, and math and science achievement--anywhere males and females don't conform to feminist expectations of gender equity. Tilting the Playing Field is an excellent book on an important subject, and will appeal to right-leaning readers who dissent from feminist orthodoxy. --John Miller

Interesting...but so what?  Apr 6, 2007
Full disclosure: I know the author personally and professionally.

Tilting the Playing Field: Schools, Sports, Sex and Title IX by Jessica Gavora is exceptionally well written and researched. One could do worse than read this book to get an overview of what is going on with Title IX and its effect on school funded sports.

In all honesty, I have little interest or background in this subject. However, since I knew the author and had been impressed by some of her writing and verbal arguments on other subjects; decided to invest some time in learning about this hot button issue.

Even if all of Ms Gavora's facts and arguments are spot on, it is difficult for me to see why anyone would care about publicly funded sports in high school and college. When I attended college at the University of Oklahoma, that institution was a hot bed of out of control athletes. Cutting some funding and forcing these folks to compete in student funded and ran intramural activities seems like it would have been an improvement. Indeed, many of the athletes I met or observed in college had no business being in college. When I hear that certain universities have an 80% or 90% graduation rate among athletes, I know that someone is cooking the books. The graduation among ALL students at a typical state university normally hovers around 50% of any incoming freshman class.

Moreover, if one looks at the military academies, it is easy to make the argument that the attempt to develop competitive football and basketball teams has lowered standards academically and professionally. The recent scandals at the Naval Academy have all largely involved those on athletic scholarships. Fundamentally, one must ask if student funded and student led intramural sports are more effective at developing leadership and management skills than the current system.

Since I feel that the current system is so inherently flawed, the fact that Title IX is badly "tilting" it in an unnatural state is not an issue, in my humble opinion, for concern.

Regardless, this book is extremely well researched and written. While I disagree with the thesis of this book, I would gladly read another book by the same author just to enjoy her academic rigor and beautiful writing.

Spreading the Truth!!!!  Mar 9, 2007
This book is fantastic! A real page turner. Other books on Title IX are very dense and technical. Gavora provides all the history of Title IX in an entertaining and fascinating manner, along with great case studies of what the legistlation has done. Anyone interested in Title IX should read this book.

great book  Dec 21, 2006
This is the best analysis you'll find on this important topic. It's a great place to start for anyone who wants to learn more about Title IX.

Way off base...Gavora misses facts  Nov 18, 2005
In this book, Gavora continues to perpetuate the myth that Title IX is responsible for the elimination of men's sports. Nevermind the fact that nowhere in Title IX does it say cut men's teams and create women's teams. However, that is what Gavora insinuates which is just wrong. It is administrators (mostly men) who make the decision to eliminate sports, a small fact which Gavora overlooks. Overall, this book was filled with inacuracies and I would not recommend it.

The consequences of ignoring differences  Jun 24, 2004
A good example of the law of unintended consequences can be seen in the US law, Title IX, passed by Congress in 1972. Born of humble beginnings with a laudable aim, it soon mushroomed into a powerful tool of feminists and gender benders to remake the world in their own image.

Title IX had as its purpose the simple prevention of discrimination based on sex, when it comes to participation in any education program or activity. It soon came to bear heavily on the area of sports participation. And it soon went from a simple plea for equity to another affirmative action program, complete with preferences and quotas.

And with many affirmative action programs, it demanded not just equality of opportunity, but equality of outcome as well. And when unequals are treated equally, or are mandated to have equal outcomes, then real inequality results. New discrimination and inequality came into play. Boys and men, and boy's and men's programs, especially in sports, were the real casualty. Many male sports programs and activities were axed or cut back in funding, in order to get the 50-50 mix.

But it went even further, and Gavora documents the many heart breaking cases. For example, one University was not content with the 50-50 mix in athletics' spending and programs, but insisted it be 53-47, since 53% of the student body was female.

And it was not just males and male programs that suffered. Females also suffered. For example, if a girl really preferred to be a cheer leader instead of a football halfback, she often found her desires frustrated, with the gender equity police insisting that females not take on what they perceived to be traditional female roles.

A regime of androgyny, in other words, was enforced by the gender benders, regardless of the whether it was in the best interests of all concerned. Thus tax payers subsidised a system which was often out of kilter with the biological realities of those involved.

The feminists insisted that male-female differences are only social constructs, not something rooted in our very nature. They insisted that the sexes are identical in their interests and abilities. And they insisted that such parity be fully represented in our schools, even in our sports, with the full force of the law brought to bear on those who do not comply.

Guided by these stubborn, and often irrational, convictions, they insisted that if a school has 33 boys playing soccer, then 33 girls should be playing it as well. They insisted that if males are over-represented in advanced maths and sciences, then this `obvious injustice' must be remedied by force of law. Never mind that there may in fact be good reasons why such iniquities exist. Never mind that males tend to prefer sport more than females. Never mind that boys may be hotwired by nature to excel in science while doing poorer in other academic subjects.

But such differences are clearly documented by the social sciences. The emerging fields of genetics and evolutionary psychology, and our growing understanding of male and female sex hormones, are all pointing in the same direction: males and females are different. These are innate and deeply rooted differences. Environmental and social factors do explain in part these differences, but they are only a small part of the equation.

From quite early ages boys will engage in rough and table group play much more than will girls. Young girls are much more interested in play parenting than play fighting, reflecting their natural tendency for nurturing and personal relationships. Males are more aggressive and competitive, while females are more likely to avoid risk and to develop relationships. And because of these differences, not only do more males like to play sport, but more males like to watch sport as well.

Nature it seems has hardwired such differences into us, and government attempts to act as if they do not exist, or to seek to eradicate them, can only result in chaos and grief. Indeed, given that males have 10 to 20 times more testosterone than females, it is folly to ignore the very real biological and psychological differences between the sexes.

This volume documents how ideology and social activism, instead of sound reason and good science, determine much of our social policy. The results have been disastrous, with many casualties along the way. A mandated androgynous ideal may appeal to feminists and government bureaucrats, but it does real damage to ordinary men and women, as this book so clearly shows.
