Item Description... Overview A collection of important essays by Evangelical essayists explores the history of scholarship on 1 and 2 Timothy and Titus, and thoroughly examines Paul's theology in the Pastoral Epistles. Original.
Publishers Description
After a lengthy period during which scholars paid relatively little attention to the Pastoral Epistles, a spate of studies has suddenly appeared in print. However, except for a small number of commentaries, critical scholars have by and large neglected evangelical scholarship on these letters. To fill in this gap, this volume offers a collection of important essays written by evangelicals on 1 & 2 Timothy and Titus. The book aims to inform readers of the history of scholarship on these letters and examine thoroughly Paul's theology in the Pastoral Epistles.Contributors include several scholars who have done previous advanced work on these letters: I. Howard Marshall (University of Aberdeen, Scotland; Recent Study in the Pastoral Epistles), Andreas Köstenberger (Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary[SEBTS]; Hermeneutical and Exegetical Challenges), Terry L. Wilder (B&H Publishing Group; Authorship), F. Alan Tomlinson (Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary [MBTS]; Purpose/Stewardship), Greg Couser (Cedarville University; Doctrine of God), Daniel L. Akin (SEBTS; Christology), Ray van Neste (Union University; Cohesion and Structure of the PE), B. Paul Wolfe (Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary; Use of Scripture), Ben Merkle (SEBTS; Ecclesiology), George Wieland (Carey Baptist College, New Zealand; Soteriology), Thor Madsen (MBTS; Ethics), and Chiao Ek Ho (East Asia School of Theology, Singapore; Missiology). |

 | An Excellent Foundation Apr 6, 2010 |
I just finished reading through my copy of Entrusted with the Gospel: Paul's Theology in the Pastoral Epistles. Not having done any previous in-depth study on the Pastoral Epistles (1 Timothy, 2 Timothy, and Titus), I must say that I found this volume to be largely helpful, a definite recommendation. I will warn the interested reader to take seriously the caption on the back of the book; `A Thorough Guide To Recent Scholarship on the Pastoral Epistles.' Entrusted with the Gospel is definitely not a stroll through the park. Although the reader need not possess an exacting use of the original languages to maximize on the outstanding scholarship in this work, the book is geared toward those of an academic bent. Although thick at times, the book is certainly worth wading through. Many, often times, associate the word 'scholarly' with `lifeless'. This work rises above such criticism.
Entrusted with the Gospel has been successful in whetting my appetite for a life-long study of the Spirit's message through Paul in the Pastoral Epistles. I have come away with a heightened sense of the many debates which still rage in regard to these letters. This work has helped me get a feel-acting as a guide-for sorting through the issues with more clarity than I possessed before. Most of all, I have grown in an ability to read the texts of 1 Timothy, 2 Timothy, and Titus with a much greater degree of accuracy and understanding. There is much to glean from the Pastorals, and this volume provides a firm foundation from which to delve into the depths of what the Spirit has to say through Paul. If read prayerfully and reflectively, with the actual text of Scripture open (which, I suspect, is how the contributors would wish their work to be approached), I cannot see how Entrusted with the Gospel could be read without a passion for the person of Christ, the purity of His bride (the church), and the centrality of His Gospel resulting. For any serious student of God's word, Entrusted with the Gospel will be more than beneficial for developing a clearer understanding of the Spirit's message through Paul in the Pastoral Epistles.
