| I ordered this series for my 3rd grade public school classroom. When they arrived, my first thought was that they looked great for my more struggling readers - cute, engaging, larger font with a wider line-spacing. But then I turned to the back, and the blurb concludes, "Can God help Meghan find out what she does best?" They're all like that: "Can God help Meghan let go of her secret, angry thoughts?" "But will God help her plan to work?" "Can God help her let the real Meghan shine? Find out with Meghan hos God sees us, no matter how we are all dressed up." If you're teaching in a Christian school and are looking for something real and engaging, not saccharine or phoney, then by all means order these books. But if you're in public school, beware! Meghan Rose on Stage, written by former first grade teacher Lori Z. Scott, is a good place to begin when your child is ready for an essentially non-illustrated chapter book.
Meghan Rose is a typical first grader, and when she learns her school is having a talent show, she's excited - and a bit worried. What, exactly, is her talent? That girl she doesn't care much for, Lynette, plays the piano. Her good friend Ryan dribbles balls and is great at blowing bubbles. But Meghan isn't good at anything at all. So she prays about it.
Later, her moms says,
"God gives each of us different talents. Don't compare yourself too much to other people. Just focus on what you can do best...The Bible tells us to be content in all situations. Content with much...or with little."
When at last Meghan decides her talent show act will be performing "the awesome, amazing, incredible, frightening volcano demonstration" (i.e., making a clay volcano erupt with baking soda and vinegar), she feels much more confident. But then her friend Ryan uses the water bottle she's filled with vinegar to water the class plants. Her act is ruined. Now what will she do?
It's not until Lynette gets a terrible case of stage fright that Meghan realizes what her true talent is. She tells her teacher: "I prayed for an idea, Mrs. Arnold...And I thought about what I do best. And it isn't jumping. Or chanting...It's being a friend..." So Meghan asks Lynette and many of her other classmates to join her on stage. And they are great.
What I Like: This book reminds me a lot of the Natalie books by Dandi Daley Mackall, which are targeted more toward preschoolers and kindergartners. Meghan isn't quite as well written, but is penned in an easier to read style. If you and your children like Nat, then you'll probably like Meghan, too.
Meghan is flawed, but wants to please God, and we see her dealing with common things like jealousy and wishing not-so-nice people ill - and then feeling guilty about it - with prayer. There is some humor; for example Meghan's mom tells her she'll grow eyes in the back of her head when she becomes a mother, and Meghan decides the lumps just behind her eyes are really her "eye buds," which will open up upon having a child.
A neat bonus is the inclusion of a few discussion questions at the end of the book, plus five activities to try (including creating a clay, baking soda, and vinegar volcano). There are also five black and white line, cartoon-like illustrations by Stacy Curtis scattered throughout the book.
What I Dislike: At times, this book seems to copycat the mainstream Junie B. Jones series, except that it's not nearly as funny. There were also times when Meghan Rose On Stage's first grade characters seemed to speak with the maturity of an adult. Nonetheless, the book as a whole has good kid appeal.
Overall Rating: Very good.

| We have read and reread all of the Junie B. books and love them dearly. I was looking for another series for my 5 and 7 year old girls and someone recommended this one to us. From the moment we started reading it, both girls said "sounds just like Junie B." - from the way she has a preference for her name, to the girl in her class who she doesn't like, to the boy who is her friend, even some of her expressions, only without the laugh out loud until your sides hurt humor. So it's an ok book, and the religious aspect is different, but if you're looking for a funny book for the first grade girls, I'd recommend Junie B. | | |  | Great Alternative to Junie B. Jones!!! What a refreshing series targeted towards princesses between the ages of 6-9 and an answered prayer for an alternative to Junie B. Jones!!! (Don't get me wrong, I love Junie! But... Well, if you've read Junie, you know where I'm going with this.)
These books deal with topics such as: true beauty, peer pressure, friendships, patience, and everything else that a little girl might have to tackle! Not to mention... these books are HILARIOUS! Lori has truly mastered the ability to not only put herself into a child's mind, but writes in a casual form that every little girl will understand.
As if that isn't enough... At the end of every book Lori has added a "Chatter Matters" section! What an awesome way to open up the lines of communication with our little ladies and Lori even brought in a few Bible verses to spark more curiosity and further discussions! And... "BLAM! Great Activity Ideas" section that ties in with each story! This is great!
My younger daughter and I had the pleasure of reading All Dressed Up and FELL IN LOVE with Meghan! We both agree that once your little girl picks the first book up, she'll cry out to read the rest!!! But don't take my word for it. Here's what my daughter has to say: "This book was so funny & cute.
