 | Good organizational pointers for a "men's club" ministry May 11, 2010 |
There have been some exciting things happening in our home church and several study groups have begun. Besides that, I had heard the name Sonderman before. These facts brought my attention to this book. The beginning is very interesting and has some deep Christian principles, like being mission-centered, having prayer as a compass and the Word of God as foundation. Furthermore, the author is concerned about the fact that men need support from other men, and that men of integrity are only those with firm biblical convictions, godly character and a congruent way of life. Therefore, a men's ministry would be focused on men of intimacy, with God, with his wife and with other men, with the objective of attaining the latter. The author also emphasizes the importance of a continuous program that would help men grow in Christ. However, several chapters are dedicated to the different activities that might be considered for men's ministry, like sports or championships. True, special days are always an opportunity to share the gospel, but I do not feel comfortable with planning ministry activities and studies around such. Actually, my opinion is that these have taken priority over the Scriptures; the church is not meant to celebrate matches with others. Besides, there are men (my deacon husband included) that have seen again and again that having a "man's day" does not edify the church, as the purpose of fellowship then, growing together closer to God, appears to be just a consequence, rather than the cause of getting together. Having said this, I must also say that the pointers Mr. Sonderman suggests for organizing and setting up a ministry are good. It is even better that some business organization books I've read. So... yes, we might consider some of his tips in the new study groups. The bottom line, there must be a sound balance between events that appeal to men and spiritual growth. Just as the author puts it, the focus should be on the people, not on programs. I received a complimentary copy of this book from Bethany House Publishers for review, but this does not bias my opinion on the book nor the author.

Thanks to Bethany House the review copy. I am involved in leadership of the adult ministries area at my church, and we have been looking to expand our men's ministry, so it was with great interest that I delved into this book. Sonderman passes on a lot of experience in this informative book about building a men's ministry. A few major emphases come across. One is the need to proceed slowly and deliberately, taking time to build a leadership team and bathing the effort in prayer, surveying the men in your church to gauge interest and needs, and building up incrementally from a foundation. A second emphasis is on having a mission statement for the ministry, and likewise always remaining cognizant of the mission and purpose of each event (does this fit in with our mission?). A third emphasis is on the importance of small groups to real life change. A last emphasis is on the need for careful planning and delegation, bringing many men into the preparation for and conduct of ministry events.
It is obvious, as you read this book, that Sonderman has learned many lessons from his years of experience, both in his own church and in his networking and speaking across the country, and those lessons are passed along as he goes. I also appreciate the balance of both practical wisdom and strategic thinking that comes across in these pages. He helps you both to think big picture about what a men's ministry is as why to do it, as well as how to have a Saturday morning breakfast that works. In all, I found this to be a great resource for thinking about and planning a men's minsitry. | | | | Helpful book for this niche in ministry Mar 8, 2010 |
Ever look out on your congregation, see a bunch of women, and very few men? I have. And it is very common in churches throughout the country. Perhaps it is timely that one of the first books on ministry with men has been revised and expanded for a new release. Steve Sonderman is the author of this very thorough book and believes that effective ministy with and to men is essential for a healthy church. How to Build a Life-Changing Men's Ministry is everything you would expect from a men's ministry pioneer. This book is detailed, thorough, and filled with helpful hints discovered by a veteran in men's ministry.
The book begins with a careful explanation of why a men's ministry is important. Then, the author continues by helping the reader understand the world he is living in. The book continues by giving a detailed process and timeline of how to develop a ministry to men. One might expect this to be overly prescriptive. It is not. It clearly lays out several options that have worked at every step along the men's ministry journey, and shares the strengths of each of these approaches. Examples of administrative paperwork, checklists, and timelines fill the end of each chapter. Throughout the process of sharing how to develop a ministry to men, Sonderman uses the metaphor of developing a team like a football team for ministry.
Certainly I think Sonderman has a difficult job in trying to write THE DEFINITIVE BOOK ON MEN'S MINISTRY, but he makes a good attempt. I read through several parts of the book and thought that they were excellent. I read through other parts, and it was clear that the author lives and works in the suburban megachurch bubble. The cultural analysis of our culture, and its relationship to men and masculenity is right on, as are many of his goals.
The only part of the book that I thought was rather dated was the Campus Crusade philosophy of creating the big splash event, and then building off the big event to form a smaller more solid core group. In my opinion, observation, and experience, this is a method that worked better 20 years ago than it does for most minsitries today.
Overall, if you are interesting in developing a better outreach to men in your church, I recommend this book as a valuable resource.

| Somehow, in today's culture, the man of the house (single or married) seems to be the most forgotten and displaced person. So, when Steve Sonderman's book "How To Build A LIFE-CHANGING Men's Ministry" was given to me to review by Bethany House I gladly read his suggestions (and passed the book on to my pastor husband). Steve Sonderman is a seasoned pastor so his suggestions and views are not just because he "feels this or that" but he can honestly tell us how to encourage and better our churches to include men because he has been through the trenches. This book has a lot of practical ideas and Steve even gives schedules that one can use when starting a men's group. Incorporating men into our churches is much needed. Our young boys and teenagers need the guidance and support of godly men in the church. I would say this isn't necessarily a book for women but it's a "man's man" book. My pastor husband was encouraged by this book and will incorporate some of Steve's ideas. This is a great resource for both pastors and men in leadership. | | | Write your own review about How To Build A Life-Changing Mens Ministry
