| The NIV Application Commentary Series is one of the best commentary series I have ever encountered. Each commentary goes through the text of its respective book and 1) grapples with the original meaning, 2) finds bridging concepts from other passages of Scripture and historical sources, and 3) gleens present day applications out of the biblical text. While this commentary is sound theologically, its focus is more pastoral. It seeks to answer the question, "How do I live by these principles today?" The Philippians commentary follows this template with great success. One of the most profound themes of the commentary, and the book of Philippians, deals with the question of suffering.
